JOHNSON'S® Newborn Massage Guide
Massaging your newborn baby brings with it so many wonderful benefits. Baby might be delicate, but a routine massage shortly after birth helps nurture and grow your bond – leading to their happy and healthy development.
How To: Massage a Newborn
Express your love and care through newborn massage, so you’re able to get a better understanding of how baby communicates with you and how you can support them.
Massage Tips & Tricks
Your soothing hands can create a beautiful bond between you and baby. In the first few weeks, use slow and positive strokes without spending too much time on one specific area. Newborns may find their senses over-stimulated, so some will enjoy the simple embrace in the arms of their parents while others might like a gentle stroke down their back and over their clothes. Start easing into a routine with these newborn massage techniques.
Massage Resting Hands
Does baby’s body language say ‘yes’ to newborn massage? If so, begin with a resting hand, a technique used before massaging any area of the body that can also be used when baby needs a break. It’s a great way to start so baby can get comfortable with your touch.
Massage Legs
Ensure you have enough baby oil on your hands before you start. The legs are a great area to start because babies are generally more comfortable being touched there and find downward strokes relaxing.
Legs - Milking
With one hand, gently hold your baby’s ankle. Place your other hand at the top of your baby’s thigh, molding it around the leg, then slide it to the ankle. Repeat with firm yet gentle rhythmic strokes, one hand after the other.
Massage Feet
Tickle and touch baby’s feet – it’s one of their favourite spots. Just watch baby’s reactions to gauge their comfort and sensitivity level. Gently squeeze and roll each toe between your thumb and index finger. Use alternate thumbs, stroke the top of their foot from toes to the ankles. Repeat several times.
Massage Tummy
Give baby a gentle newborn tummy massage after their umbilical cord has healed. Make gentle contact with baby’s tummy with a reassuring and relaxed hand. If baby is happy, make gentle paddling strokes with one hand following the other.
Massage Back
Enrich your bond with baby with skin-to-skin contact between baby, mom and dad. Keep baby close to your chest and massage their back beginning at the neck, swooping down to their bottom.
